Mike Golub is heading home to New York to take over the business operations of the New York Rangers after spending five seasons in the front office of the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies. In his new role with the Rangers, Golub will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Rangers’ business activities and will be the team’s chief marketing officer.
What is the biggest challenge in your new position?
Re-establishing the relationship between the Rangers and our fans, sponsors, community partners and media.
What is the biggest risk you’ve taken in your career?
Helping start an event business at Nike (Nike Sports Entertainment).
What is your biggest professional accomplishment in your career?
Relocating and successfully launching the Memphis Grizzlies and opening the FedEx Forum.
What is your biggest professional disappointment in your career?
Not being taller or quicker than Earl Boykins.
What career advice do you have for people wanting to get into this industry?
Approach it like an athlete does his or her sport — work your butt off, set goals, be a good teammate, love what you do and give back to the community.
What is one story you are continuing to watch in sports today?
The NHL, NFL and NBA’s collective-bargaining agreement negotiations.
What kind of effect do you think the lockout will have on the Rangers and the NHL?
I think when it is ultimately settled, the NHL and its clubs will be much better positioned for long-term competitive and financial success and growth. In the short term, we will have to work extremely hard at bringing our established base back to our sport and find creative ways to grow new fans.
