Job Description:
Help keep the rubber side down and become a member of our Tires and Tubes development team. This position works closely with bicycle tire vendors in Asia and raw material suppliers worldwide on tire reinforcement materials and tire compounds.
How You Will Make a Difference:
Responsible for compound formulations and mixing parameters. Follow mixing operations and make modifications as needed to improve quality and processing at the tire vendor factories in Asia.
Responsible for tire reinforcement materials, working with material and tire vendors to implement materials in production.
Translate undefined customer/ rider feedback into target specifications for compounds and materials.
Conduct evaluations of new raw materials. Suggest new processes to improve manufacturing operations. Keep contact with raw material vendors to discuss new technology and raw material improvements.
Initiate and advise material and compound sample trials and monitor the effects at the mixers, extruders, colanders, cutters, tire building machines and curing presses. Review stress test results of sample tires.
Troubleshoot tire quality problems. Identify and assist in the correction of deviations from specification, quality guidelines, or good practice. Work with vendor employees to devise solutions in production. Define and implement process quality gates at the tire vendor.
Stay informed of new technology through contact with raw material vendors, discussions with tire vendor personnel and reading technical publications. Attend seminars or professional group meetings.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
Bachelor’s degree required (Material Science, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry majors preferred)
2-5 years minimum work experience in the chemical or automotive industry (preferably tire industry)
Experience in rubber compounding and process quality control
Demonstrated experimentation and problem solving skills
Ability to carry out assignments in a methodological order
Effective written, verbal, interpersonal and intercultural communication skills (main contacts will be in Asia)
Ready to travel frequently to Asia and stay in Asia at vendor sites for several weeks to execute projects
Strong functional and cross-functional team-player
Microsoft Office skills
Based in Morgan Hill, CA or Taichung, Taiwan (Taiwan preferred)
Bicycle enthusiast desirable but not essential
