There is a recent study published saying that 65% of people, within three months of finding a new job, are already in the midst of a fresh job search. There is no sense of loyalty anymore, most worker-types used to get into a job and bank on being there for at least 1-3 years. The belief always was, you need to have strong examples on your resume of being loyal, of showing you can learn and you can grow. within a company. That jumping around from job to job was a red flag on your resume.

But now, we’re a restless community, essentially saying, “Yeah I got this job and I went through the interview process and I worked hard to get it…but I’d kind of like to see what else is out there.”

  1. I have been looking for a job for 9 months, and could find none. I am unemployed, although I have experience.

    Now, I hear that all statistics point at how nice the situation is, how improved, etc.
    That is wrong. There are no jobs, it is all wrong!

  2. So would showing loyalty be a good thing in a job search or does a smattering of multiple employments tend to be better?

    I have stayed 2-3 years in each of a few occupations and even worked 6 years at an engineering degree before decide to turn my life in a new direction to better position myself for a career in sports and finding an internship, let alone a career to start, is near impossible sometimes. How else can I stand out?

    • Each hiring manager is different, but every one I have talked to is afraid of the person who has jumped from job to job often, without staying long. They fear investing in this person through training etc, and then having them leave for another position leaving them back on the search again. – Brian

    I graduated this past May from Virginia Tech as a statistics major, having even been recommended and named as the commencement speaker at graduation. I have been applying to jobs for 5 months now all across the country. Through nearly 400 applications, a plethora of interviews, and flying across the country to meet with employers, I am still left unemployed. Finishing my degree with a 3.758 GPA my senior year, named as the commencement speaker at graduation, and working 10 hours a day filling out resumes, it’s hard to believe that companies are truly seeking candidates for all of these roles. The motivation to continue working hard seeking employment is a lot easier said than done. For all of the statistics stating the enormous number of people in this country that are unemployed, I now see why.

    • Joe, I agree, there are many misleading statistics out there regarding employment that make it sound like jobs are just hanging there to be picked off trees. I often wonder if the positive numbers are from jobs that are not highly educated, and the sector you are in, (i.e. educated and capable) is the most difficult to break in. You’ll get your break – keep at it. Have you looking in minor leagues or colleges? Many of these smaller programs are breaking into analytics, which with your statistics background could be a good match. Consider attending the MLB winter meetings there is a huge minor league baseball hiring fair that takes place — could be some opportunities that arise. -Brian

  4. Hello Brian,

    I have an extensive background in capital equipment sales and I’m back searching for an outside sales opportunity again. The past several months, I needed to resign from my company, and be a full time caregiver for my family, only to have a misfortune happen. So now my job searching has become a challenge for me, as a senior, professional rep. I have a lot to offer a company, but ether due to my age or a company feels that they can’t afford me or train me cause I may be too set in my sales ways, has put this challenge on me now. I have experienced all of this these in the past several months. It’s unfortunate that a good company can’t look through the forest to see all the trees!
