Job Description:

The Branch Executive Director is responsible for expanding the mission, vision and values of the YMCA through responsive programs within Monroe and Trumbull. Responsibilities include all aspects of facility and program operations but in particular, strategic development of an engaged board of managers; ensuring adequate funding through programmatic offerings particularly membership, fitness and aquatics; maintaining and developing positive and reciprocal relationships with community leaders; and implementation of annual development plan. Need and potential for expansion exist including a possible move of location, but strong leadership is required to engage stakeholders, develop and execute a plan based on community needs and opportunities. The Executive Director is also responsible for implementing the branch operating plan, preparing and monitoring the annual budget.
The Lakewood-Trumbull YMCA branch has a budget of $2.6 million, a dedicated full-time staff of 5 and part-time staff of 90+, a Board of Managers and good community involvement. This Y is a family focused YMCA focusing on Membership, Wellness, Gymnastics, Dance School Age Child Care, and an off-site Summer Day Camp. It boasts a Family Outdoor Center with 3 pools for recreational, instructional and competitive aquatics during the summer; as well as tennis courts, pavilions and other outdoor facilities

The key challenges facing this branch are:

• Strategic development of the board of managers and other YMCA champions to ensure responsiveness to community needs and commensurate financial support (annual and capital)
• Achievement of local fundraising goals including the Annual Campaign target of $93,500 for 2017
• Development of a summer camp improvement strategy
• Development of a facility improvement plan
• Build and improve the staff team in accordance with the strategic and operating plan
• Continued growth in Real Time Strategic Plan goal benchmarks


• Bachelor’s degree.
• A minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience.
• Successful community leadership experience, especially in convening local stakeholders and responding to specified community needs. Must have demonstrated success in building and maintaining strong community relationships.
• Must have proven skills in written and oral communication.
• Significant experience in fund raising (lead Annual campaign of at least $50,000 and/or capital campaign of at least $500,000)
• Board/staff development experience (fundraising, advocacy)
• Budget responsibility of at least $1 million
• Successful staff supervision experience, including of exempt staff
• Must have high level of computer competency, including Microsoft Office


• Experience in strategic planning, community needs assessment
• Management of full facility program center.
• Building project management experience
• A working knowledge of windows based/member management software
• Completion of Executive Development Institute
• YMCA Multi-Team or Branch Leader Certification
• Child Care licensing and Accreditation experience

Essential Functions

• Strategic Development of the Board of Managers. Determine key volunteer requirements and build a board of involved local community leaders. Assess the existing board from a time-talent-treasury perspective based on branch and community objectives.
• Lead Local Fundraising Efforts. Develop a comprehensive Branch fund raising plan that lists sources, expected target amounts, volunteer leadership, and specific actions necessary to increase the fundraising objective to $93,500 in 2017.
eBuild a Strong Relationship with the Community. As part of this overall plan, one critical component of the branch’s mission is to match the YMCA services with the community needs. Determine the scope and quality of the services the branch currently offers in light of these community needs and in comparison to competitive groups
• Improve Operating Performance. Revenue management and expense control are vital concerns of the Branch Executive. Determine the revenue/expense status of current and upcoming activities and the effectiveness of all revenue programs.
• Establish and Implement an Operating and Capital Improvement Plan. Working with the Senior VP/COO, the volunteer board of managers and staff establish a yearly operating plan. These plans will provide the blueprint for implementing the YMCA mission, vision and values to achieve success as defined by the Association’s RTSP (Real Time Strategic Plan).
• Effectively Operate the Facility and All Program Activities: Manage the facility on a daily basis, ensuring that regular activities run smoothly and that special programs/events run smoothly.
• Build and Manage the Staff Team. Evaluate the current strengths and weaknesses of all key staff and rebuild as necessary to ensure the branch meets all of its performance goals and ensure that the YMCA has an outstanding and effective staff.
