Job Description

Purpose Statement

The job of Director of Nutrition Services is done for the purpose/s of applies professional knowledge, ethics, and administrative skills in establishing the direction, vision, and strategy for a comprehensive child nutrition program in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, local and state health ordinances, district policies, and in alignment and collaboration with district, community, and partnership initiatives. The position includes administration, planning, directing, assessing, implementing, marketing, and evaluation of a financially sound program to meet the nutritional, educational, and community needs of students. The Director employs exemplary leadership and communication skills to maintain healthy morale, resolution of operational issues and strong working relationships with staff, students, purveyors, teachers, and all stakeholders.

This job reports to the Chief Operations Officer.

Essential Functions

  • Assesses and administers budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances and related financial activities for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Collaborates with executive board administrators, auditors, outside organizations, and professionals, for the purpose of exchanging and assessing information, and planning, implementing and administering policy, programs and initiatives with district, local, state, regional, and national impact.
  • Develops the department strategy and recommends policy for the child nutrition program for the purpose of district program growth and success and meeting the community needs.
  • Develops and promotes all partnership activities and marketing events with community and regional impact of a comprehensive child nutrition program for the purpose of complying with federal laws, state laws, local regulations, school board policies and the professional standards.
  • Directs personnel functions for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing knowledge and productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within the budget.
  • Directs a comprehensive child nutrition program for the purpose of providing services and ensuring district compliance with federal, state, local, and district laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Facilitates meetings and workshops for the purpose of staff development, identifying issues and initiatives, developing strategies and recommendations, and serving as a district, community, state, and national resource for child nutrition.
  • Oversees the development of public information materials and media releases pertaining to the Child Nutrition program and meets with students, teachers, employees, vendors, community groups, as well as professional and industry advisory boards for the purpose of marketing the Child Nutrition program.
  • Oversees and evaluates nutrition services administrative protocol (e.g. hiring/termination recommendations; planning/scheduling/coordinating activities; training; advising; consulting; evaluating and counseling subordinate personnel as required; all subordinate nutrition service workers; nutrition and service activities and efforts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Oversees, collaborates, assesses and directs recommendations for sustainable facility and equipment design and layout for renovation and new food service facility construction projects for the purpose of ensuring the efficient use of department facilities.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars at local, state, regional, and national levels for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to facilitate the growth of a progressive child nutrition program.
  • Prepares a variety of reports for the purpose of assessing, implementing, and conveying information, meeting and/or exceeding federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Presents information at district, local, state, and federal levels (e.g. budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to program regulatory laws.
  • Researches a variety of topics (e.g. new products, safety and health requirements, laws, regulations, etc.) for the purpose of recommending purchases, contracts and maintaining district-wide services.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using a variety of software applications; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations; personnel processes; standard business practices; program planning and development; concepts of grammar and punctuation; and concepts of quantity cooking and nutritional analysis.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 20% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.  

Education: Bachelor's Degree in job related area
