Job Description

Position Summary:         MLB Network seeks a Specialist, Programming to assist in daily operations of MLB and NHL’s 24/7/365 cable television networks. This role will require an individual who is well versed in baseball and hockey in general while also understanding the programming, formatting, and operational requirements of top tier television networks.

 

Responsibilities:           

  • Enter program scheduling information into SIMS programming software for both MLB and NHL Networks and assist with distribution of program grids.
  • Manage reporting functions of scheduling software to create and distribute appropriate planning and customized reporting as requested by other departments.
  • Screen all taped non-quick turn programming prior to premiere.
  • Manage delivery of taped programming inclusive of working with Production and Master Control (ensuring house numbers are communicated, anticipated delivery dates/times are set and that shows pass QC within Master Control).
  • Point person with studio operations, scheduling and talent relations to help ensure studio staffing can accommodate programming plans and any pre-produced bridge/other content needs with existing resources.
  • Work with in-house and external producers to edit non-MLB Network programming to time and segment requirements prior to air (e.g. – feature films & acquired programming).
  • Serve as fill-in for Managers of Programming in managing real-time program changes (news, live event, weather, etc.)  and communicating to appropriate distribution lists as required for a 24/7/365 television network.
  • Distribute program listings to domestic and international providers while serving as main point of contact for listings related inquiries and issues.
  • Review conditions memos to ensure accuracy of programming information, prepare weather reports for upcoming game windows, attend conditions meetings and update scheduling information as relevant out of those meetings.
  • Collaborate with other departments on various issues (e.g., Production, Business Affairs, Media Relations, Broadcast Operations, Master Control, Marketing, Promotions, Media Management, etc.).
  • Gain working knowledge and be in place to support and serve as a backup to Traffic, Promotions scheduling, and conditional access/blackout management teams.
  • Other such duties as required.

                                            

It is expected that the Programming Specialist will maintain and increase knowledge in the Programming discipline as well as the business on an ongoing basis. 

 

Skills & Experience:    The ideal candidate must have most if not all of the following skills and experiences:

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience or related business experience is required.
  • Experience in the television, production industry, advertising/promotions or affiliate sales are preferred.
  • Strong preference to someone fluent with television programming, promotions and traffic software (Broadway, GripIT and SIMS a plus).
  • Self-starter, takes initiative, works independently.
  • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Candidate must be proficient in Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Approaches problems as opportunities for learning and creative thinking.
  • Patient, flexible, and capable of effectively adapting to change.
  • Must possess a high level of attention to detail and superior follow up skills.
  • Strong project management, internal negotiation skills, and the ability to grasp and implement financial and operational considerations within the scope of work.
  • Strong written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate the tact, diplomacy, decisiveness, and superior people skills required in the pressurized environment of live television.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Ability to organize and schedule work effectively.
  • Ability to work well independently and under time constraints.
  • Ability to lift 10 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. 
  • Possess visual acuity sufficient to perform required tasks.
  • Possess manual dexterity sufficient to perform required tasks.
  • Possess a level of hearing sufficient for effective interaction with stakeholders by various means, including in-person, via phone, etc.

 

Education:   Bachelor’s degree is required.
