Position: Middle School Girls Golf Assistant Coach
Location: Jones Middle School
Reports to: Athletic Director

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for coaching and providing direction to student athletes so that they achieve a high level of skill as well as an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork in girls golf.

  • Education and/or Experience: High school certification and previous interscholastic girls golf coaching experience preferred. Prior successful experience working in a school setting or coaching student athletes strongly preferred.
  • Accurate Reporting: Educators shall accurately report information required by the local board of education or governing board, state education agency, federal agency, or state or federal law.
  • Financial Management: Educators shall ensure all school funds and accounts are managed responsibly and transparently. School property, public funds, or fees paid by students or the community shall not be used for personal gain. Decisions must not be influenced by gifts, gratuities, favors, or the socioeconomic status of parents, family members, community members, or businesses.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to successfully coach, lead, and/or motivate adolescent students.
  • Culture and Team Building: Ability to work in alignment with the district’s strategic plan. Conducts oneself in a manner consistent with the district’s core values, mission, and vision. Demonstrates ability to build relationships with athletes, parents, and the school community. Demonstrated ability and experience in creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive team environment.
  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Effectively presents information and responds to questions in one-on-one, small group situations with students and other school staff. Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and regulations. Writes general reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Computes rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Demonstrates ability and experience in executing coaching decisions and player selection fairly, equitably, and consistently. Interprets an extensive variety of instructions in varying forms. Solves problems and handles a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and proficiency in email, internet software, and word processing software. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrates knowledge of child growth and development at each level of instruction and of the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of adolescent students. Participates in physically demanding athletic activities. Possesses knowledge of effective behavior management methods. Exercises good judgment and works in a dynamic environment.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must hold or be willing to obtain the following certifications: Fundamentals of Coaching, Concussion Training, First Aid or Sports Injury Prevention Training, CPR/AED, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (Lindsay’s Law), Ohio Department of Education Pupil Activity Permit.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Schedule Flexibility: Demonstrates availability during unusual hours to accommodate the time-intensive demands of girls golf. Recognizes that girls golf requires a significant time commitment.
  • Organizational Skills: Manages multiple schedules effectively, ensuring that three separate schedules are coordinated and that all athletes and staff are where they need to be.
  • Communication Skills: Exhibits excellent communication skills to effectively engage with families and student-athletes.
  • Knowledge and Passion for the Game: Possesses a strong understanding of the mental and physical aspects of girls golf and how to improve both. Demonstrates a deep passion for the sport.
  • Team Bonding and Culture: Fosters team bonding and creates a positive and inclusive team culture.
  • Support Youth Programs: Actively supports and engages with youth programs, recognizing their importance in developing a strong foundation for the high school program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential duties of this position include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
  2. Instructs and teaches skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement in girls golf.
  3. Establishes a fair and objective manner for executing player selection and effectively communicates with students regarding selection decisions for team rosters.
  4. Demonstrates a willingness to meet with the parent(s) or guardian(s) of any student who is a member or trying out for the team.
  5. Demonstrates the ability and/or experience to create and maintain an inclusive team culture.
  6. Plans and sets up activities, practices, and games in conjunction with the department of student life.
  7. Ensures a certified coach is present at all girls golf practices and games.
  8. Develops appropriate training programs and practice schedules.
  9. Ensures proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms and updates inventories accordingly.
  10. Arranges game transportation for athletic participants in conjunction with the department of student life.
  11. Travels with student-athletes for all events or assigns a School District-approved designee to travel with all other levels on the team bus both to and from games.
  12. Adheres to all financial policies of the district in regard to the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.
  13. Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
  14. Works directly with the Athletic Director in preparing girls golf practice and game schedules.
  15. Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork in a specified time and manner.
  16. Ensures that proper form(s) (insurance, attendance, medical) are obtained and current.
  17. Ensures that all student-athletes practicing or playing have been cleared through the Athletic Director’s office.
  18. Enforces discipline policies and emphasizes sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles. Supervises students in locker rooms at home and away games and ensures appropriate behavior.
  19. Checks and secures all office, storage room, outside doors, locker rooms, and all lights after the last player leaves after games and practices (Head Coach may delegate this responsibility to an Assistant Coach).
  20. Ensures that appropriate rules and regulations regarding the conduct and eligibility of athletic activities and athletes are explained and followed.
  21. Maintains a safe environment and facilities for student-athletes at all times.
  22. Ensures that medical and safety requirements are adhered to.
  23. Coordinates with the Press and reports game scores.
  24. Follows OHSAA rules and regulations.
  25. Follows Ohio Capital Conference rules and regulations.
  26. Provides guidance for the youth and middle school girls golf programs.
  27. Works with Athletic Training when reporting injuries.
  28. Reports and secures approval from the district for all adults associated with their sport.
  29. Submits athlete rosters to the Athletic Director three weeks before the first game, any changes to student information on the roster, inventories (copy to Office Secretary as well), final season statistics, and alphabetical list of award winners immediately following the season (list includes the number of awards earned and the class of the athlete).
  30. Consults with the Athletic Director regarding any off-season training programs.
  31. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, parents, fellow coaches, and officials and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  32. Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
  33. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with students, parents, community, staff, and the media.
  34. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  35. Attends work regularly and is punctual.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Marginal duties of this position include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Attends in-service training and staff meetings as needed.
  2. Sanitizes and cleans equipment.
  3. Inspects facilities and athletic courts for health and safety concerns.
  4. Chaperones/supervises athletic events, as needed.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but occasionally high depending upon student population and activities.
