Position Overview
Harwood Unified Union School District is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Athletic Coach to support our interscholastic athletic programs. This position assists the Head Coach in developing student-athletes both athletically and personally, promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and academic responsibility.

Key Responsibilities Coaching & Player Development
Assist the Head Coach with all coaching responsibilities and team management duties
Provide instruction in sport-specific skills and strategies
Promote discipline, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship
Support the physical, mental, and social development of student-athletes
Foster a team culture free from hazing and harassment
Team Operations & Communication
Assist with planning and scheduling practices and competitions
Supervise athletes during practices, games, locker room time, and travel
Help coordinate transportation and logistics
Assist with team meetings, tryouts, and communication of expectations and eligibility requirements
Communicate district athletic policies, procedures, and expectations to students and families
Encourage positive sportsmanship among parents and spectators
Report concerns, injuries, or incidents to the Head Coach and Athletic Director
Safety & Compliance
Monitor safety conditions of facilities and equipment
Review and follow all safety procedures, including first aid and bloodborne pathogen protocols
Maintain required certifications (VPA, ASEP, Sports First Aid, Coaching Principles, etc.)
Adhere to HUUSD policies, Vermont Principals' Association (VPA) rules, and all applicable laws and regulations
Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA
Equipment & Program Support
Assist with inventory, distribution, and collection of uniforms and equipment
Recommend equipment purchases as needed
Participate in end-of-season evaluations and program review
Support supervision and coordination of volunteers
Supervision
Receives direct supervision from the Head Coach, with administrative oversight from the Athletic Director (or Administrator in charge of athletics).
Supervisory Responsibilities
Responsible for direct supervision of student-athletes during practices, competitions, and travel. Ensures the health, safety, and welfare of all participants and responds appropriately to injuries or emergencies.
Qualifications Required
Minimum of two (2) years of varsity-level playing experience in the assigned sport, or equivalent training and experience
Knowledge of coaching principles, player development, and team management
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain professionalism in high-pressure situations
Certifications
Must meet Vermont Principals' Association (VPA) certification and training requirements
ASEP (American Sport Education Program) certification
Sports First Aid and Coaching Principles certifications
Preferred
Prior coaching experience at the middle or high school level
Experience working with student-athletes in an educational setting
Basic computer proficiency for communication and recordkeeping
Physical & Work Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, running, bending, climbing, and physical participation in the sport
Ability to demonstrate sport-specific skills
Occasional lifting of up to 150 pounds with assistance when necessary
Ability to supervise in indoor and outdoor environments
Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions
Moderate to loud noise levels during practices and events
