Position Summary

Assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for the construction and maintenance of an assigned golf course; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; participate in and perform the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below)

  • Participate in the planning, prioritizing and supervision of staff responsible for golf course maintenance and operations.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing golf course maintenance and construction services; identify and review resource needs with the Golf Course Supervisor; allocate resources accordingly.
  • Perform the more technical and complex tasks of the work unit including the application of golf course turf chemicals and assisting in the implementation of the irrigation program.
  • Inspect golf course facilities and work of technical staff; ensure accuracy of work performed and the adherence of safe work practices and procedures.
  • Supervise and assist in the service and repair of golf course maintenance and chemical application equipment.
  • Assist in the selection, training and evaluation of technical personnel; assist in providing technical staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of golf course operations and maintenance.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental technology; and

Four (4) years of experience in golf course maintenance and operations; and

To include one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Operations, services and activities of a golf course maintenance and operations program
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Principles and procedures of chemical and pesticide application
  • Modern and complex principles and practices of maintaining golf course facility systems
  • Operations of golf course turf maintenance and irrigation systems
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations

Preferred Skills and Ability

  • Assist in the operations of an assigned golf course
  • Operate and maintain turf irrigation systems
  • Apply turf chemicals within accepted guidelines
  • Supervise, organize and review the work of lower level staff
  • Supervise, train and evaluate staff
  • Interpret and explain City policies and procedures
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Perform the functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City officials and the general public

Working Conditions

Environmental:

Field environment; exposure to noise, dust, dirt, fumes, grease, oils, toxic chemicals; inclement weather conditions; work around maintenance equipment.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions may require physical condition necessary for sitting, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
