Job Description
Position Summary
The Director of Sports Medicine is an administrative position within the Department of Athletics and Physical Education, reporting to the Deputy Director of Athletics & Director of Student-Athlete Welfare. This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, 52-week position requiring weekend, holiday, early morning, and late evening hours.
The Director of Sports Medicine will collaborate with the Sports Performance, Health Services, and Counseling Services teams at Vassar to create a safe and healthy environment for student-athletes to perform and achieve at the national level while upholding Vassar's mission to foster an inclusive and transformative student experience. As such, the position will administer and advance a comprehensive Sports Medicine program for Vassars 25 Division III varsity and four varsity club programs (approximately 600 student-athletes). The position will also serve as an integral member of the Department of Athletics and Physical Education senior leadership team, function as the NCAA Health Care Administrator, and have the opportunity to provide preceptor guidance for a local ATEP program.
Responsibilities
- Development and maintenance of a positive, inclusive, and values-drive culture within the Sports Medicine team that creates a safe and healthy environment for Vassar student-athletes to practice and compete.
- Oversight of medical care of 25 varsity teams and four varsity club teams with day-to-day responsibilities including but not limited to: coordination and administration of pre-season physical exams and health updates, injury and illness evaluations, daily medical treatments, development and implementation of injury prevention and rehabilitation programs, organization of team physician clinics, and coordination of off-campus medical appointments.
- Supervision of four full-time certified athletic trainers and 10-15 student workers.
- Serve as an integral member of the Department of Athletics and Physical Educations senior leadership team, practice and game scheduling committees, and the colleges Student Support Network (SSN)
- Serve as the NCAA Health Care Administrator, to include monitoring and disseminating health and safety legislation, inter-association guidelines and best practices, and other resources.
- Provision of preceptor guidance for a local ATEP program.
- Develop, implement, and maintain all Sports Medicine protocols and procedures, including concussion protocols, emergency action plans for all home venues, and the practice and competition coverage model, etc.
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with appropriate medical personnel for the evaluation, treatment, and care of injured or ill student-athletes; personnel include off-campus resources such as local physicians, physical therapists, and other medical specialists as well as on-campus partners in Health Services, Counseling Services, Sport Performance, and the Accessibility and Educational Opportunity Office.
- Oversight of all other sports medicine administrative operations, including budget management and reconciliation, equipment and supply management, coordination of contracts with team physicians and physical therapists, verification of insurance coverage and coordination with primary and secondary insurers as needed, assignment of athletic training staff and other medical resources to all practices and contests, and maintenance of medical records.
- Provide CPR/AED/First Aid certification and other relevant in-service training courses to coaches, staff, and student workers.
- Monitor weather conditions to ensure environmental conditions are safe for practices, contests and Vassar-sponsored camps and clinics.
- Hire and supervise certified athletic trainers on a per diem basis as needed to cover Vassar home practices and competitions as well as Vassar-sponsored camps and clinics.
- Active engagement in department, campus, and local community service initiatives.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training or a related field.
- Five or more years of athletic training experience.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders, including student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and healthcare providers.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience with electronic medical records and relevant technologies.
- Knowledge and compliance with NCAA and league rules and regulations.
- Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid.
- Current NATABOC certification and New York State Licensure/Certificate.
- A valid and unrestricted driver's license.
- Successful result of a background check.
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities
- Master's degree in Athletic Training or a related field.
- Eight or more years of athletic training experience at the high school and/or intercollegiate level.
- Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid instructor training or willingness to obtain certification upon hire.
- Proven ability to promote inclusion and belonging in a sports medicine environment.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
Compensation:
The compensation for this position is $78,000 - $93,000 (USD) per year.

The starting salary range represents the Colleges good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of posting.
