Businesses are ignoring the saying “curiosity killed the cat” when hiring employees. A 2021 study showed curiosity and a desire to learn were among the hottest new skills, with 72% of leaders surveyed believing it’s a valuable trait and 59% stating they believe it drives business impact. While it is a valued trait among hiring managers, how can job seekers convey it? That’s what Stefen asked the WorkInSports Podcast:

“Hey Brian, I read an article recently that made me think of you. It was about how curiosity and being a continuous learner is more important to today’s employers than experience. What do you think? And if you agree, how do you get that message across to an employer?”

A good resume showcases your curiosity and desire to learn and how those aspects manifest themselves. Therefore, you won’t specifically list curiosity in the skills section of your resume. Still, as you list your previous experiences and accomplishments, you can weave those traits into the resume’s bullet points detailing the skills you learned and how you applied them in your professional development.

The cover letter‘s story-telling format is another way you can show a mastery of what job skills are most in-demand by employers. For example, if you taught yourself skills related to the role you want, explain why you latched onto that skill and how you achieved your goal of learning it. Including these details in the resume and cover letter will convey your curiosity and enthusiasm for learning without saying it directly and make you an attractive candidate to employers.
