Getting a job in sports can be personally rewarding, but the path to breaking into the industry there is difficult.  It’s not enough to show your degree and expect to get hired. It’s important to get as much experience as possible while in college, but how do you do that? That’s Michael’s question for the WorkInSports Podcast:

“Hi Brian, I am starting my sophomore year in college, and I just declared as a sports management major! What advice would you have for someone like me to maximize my college years and be primed to hit the workforce in 3 more years?”

How to Gain Work Experience in Sports

If you are in college pursuing a career in sports, one of the easiest places you can gain experience is by working with your school’s athletic department, which is always looking for help on gamedays and in the office. Those positions are often volunteer roles but can also be done for college credit and occasionally lead to paid responsibilities down the line, even as an undergraduate.

Speaking of college credit, internships are vital to set you apart from your peers in the sports business. Previous WorkInSports Podcast guests such as New England Patriots’ Reporter/Producer Tamara Brown and Milwaukee Bucks’ Coordinator of Partner Strategy Hollis Brown did internships in their school’s athletic departments and other locations.

As you gain experience, you will also get clarity on what type of role you want in the sports industry. Once you know where you want to go, you can give your resume a heat check, determine where your experience is lacking, and make a strategy to fill those gaps before graduation.
